in fresno county. 33-year-old juan gonzales was driving. 34 greerld bryan law was his partner. the men were good friends. they had attended training together and served with the highway patrol since 2008. the officers were responding to reports of a crash early today on highway 99 near kingsberg about 20 miles south of fresno. the chp says they were trying to avoid someone involved in that crash when they lost control of their vehicle. it hit a guardrail and flipped. >> both officers received fatal injuries instantaneously as a result of the collision. >> investigators said that both officers were wearing seat belts. the chp says it's standard procedure for two offices to ride together on the overnight shift. ktvu's christina rendon live in san jose. she's been learning more about the two officers who got their start here in the bay area. christina. >> well, this is where officer juan gonzales got his start in the san jose area office. officer bryan law started in the east bay, and its officers across the bay area and state that are mourning the loss of these two men. >> california highway
of the two officer whose were killed in the crash near fresno. officers brian law and juan gonzalez were responding to a traffic collision on highway 99 just before 6:00 a.m. as they approached the scene the california highway patrol said juan gonzalez swerved to avoid one of the people involved in the initial crash on the road. the officer's cruisers slammed into a guard rail killing both men on impact. >> they were classmates together. attended 27 weeks of training together. became good friends. >> officer juan gonzalez was just 33 years old and was not married. officer brian law was 34. he is survived by his wife and three children. and both men had ties to the bay area. ktvu's claudine wong is live where officer brian law began his law enforcement career. >> reporter: there are 90 officers here in this office and most of them did know officer brian law, even though he was based in fresno he started his career at this office. he was an officer, husband and father and to the chp family he was their brother. >> reporter: he remembers beating brian law. he was out of the academy, th

week for a first hand look at this historic drought. he's set to visit fresno next friday. he will talk about how the federal government will address the drought in the san joaquin valley. the fresno bee reports the white house plans to release more details about the president's trip soon. the president's trip will be his first to fresno. it's been over a week since a drone crashed into the pacific ocean. now, homeland security is back to flying the aircraft along the country's borders. investigators say the drone crashed due to a generator failure. the department is making mechanical upgrades to the remaining drones in the fleet to avoid future malfunctions. the crashed aircraft was one of 10 drones used by the government to patrol the borders from the air. the cost may have gone down, but the high speed rail construction will still take the same amount of time to complete. this is the word from the california high speed rail authority. a new forecast slightly lowers the 68-billion dollar price tag, but the construction timeline remains the same. the updated business plan also estimate

is underway into the deadly collision. the officers' car crash on highway 99 south of fresno. eric thomas has the latest the newsroom. >> highway 99 is closed while a c.h.p. crash investigation team is looking for clues this minute. here is what we know: the highway patrol got a report of an accident on northbound 99 at 6:00 this morning. a patrol car with two officers sped to the scene. according to a highway patrol captain the accident was actually in the southbound lanes. the same lanes the officer were responding in with lights and siren. it is possible the officers were trying to avoid the accident and one of the drivers who was out of the car and walking on the highway. >> our vehicle lost control, slided into the guardrail, and we actually have 99 southbound closed right new trying to determine what is actually the situation. >> c.h.p. officials are headed to notify the next of kin of the deadly accident. again, southbound 99 is still shut down and reason will not re-open until 1:00 o'clock p.m. at the usualliest. the highway patrol mounts two of its own. >>> thank you, eric. developin
